Description
1810 MOUNTED INFANTRY OFFICERS SABER SWORD W/ BLUE GOLD GILDING FROM PHILIP MEDICUS COLLECTION.A handsome Mounted Infantry Officer’s saber circa 1810, with a plain reverse “P” guard and birds head pommel. The bone grip is carved with alternating diagonal spirals in a less usual pattern. The blue and gold blade is especially handsome, with large panels of brightly acid etched steel interspersed.
A trophy of arms at the base of the blade has a Liberty Cap atop a spear. There is a large American eagle on one side, sitting atop a Union shield with 15 stars on it. The eagle has an almost globe shaped breast, and a ribbon in its beak reading what is believed to be “E Pluribus Unum.” I also see the word "Warranted" engraved into the blade. The other side of the blade has a standing figure of Columbia, leaning against a pillar, wearing a feathered headdress. The bright panels have flowers and vines. There is no scabbard.
Condition: The guard is bent with crack, the bone grip has two moderately large chips, and two cracks. The blade gilding is in pretty good shape considering age, with the blue largely intact. There are about a dozen nicks in the edge of the blade, some are fairly decent(photo 12). The bright of the blade retains most of its original luster, but there is a stain about 12 inches from the point. The finish is slightly rubbed along the edge. There is movement/wiggle in grip/guard/blade. The 503 tag is believed to be from the original Philip Medicus collection.
Size: 35 ½ inches long overall, with a 30 7/8" inch blade
I had an expert reach out and he (and one other expert he reached out to) believe that this sword is on page 153, plate 72a in the book "American Swords from the Collection of Philip Medicus". That plate reads: "A mounted Infantry officer's saber with silver-plated brass hilt and a curved, single edged, 30 1/2" blade. It has a blue and gilt finish with two white panels on each side, and there is an unusual engraving "AW SPIES, Warranted" is marked on the obverse base. The grips are white bone with geometric design. The leather scabbard has a throat with stud and ring and a tip" I would say this description is pretty spot on to mine, however, I will point out the differences. The scabbard is obviously not present with this one. I measured the blade to be 30 7/8", not 30 1/2". While I do see "Warranted" engraved on my this blade, I can't find AW SPIES, I feel like this says "E Pluribus Unum"? But this one does have everything else including the two white panes on each side and bone geometric grip with the blue and gilt finish. While I can't guarantee it's the same sword, it is highly thought to be. Please do your own research and decide for yourself.
