Army General Service “US” Coat Button, 1808-1830 (Albert GI 30 A) D32

  • Condition: This pewter button is a very nice example of a cast one-piece “US” coat button. It was found in the water which accounts for its great condition. Pewter buttons of this type do not usually fare well in the acid soils of this region. It is a coat button, 19 mm in diameter, and simply marked with a Roman “US.” The casting is strong and the letters are very sharp. The rim is intact with slight roughness. The planchet is a bit wavy, but the field is smooth with almost no corrosion. Only a small bit of corrosion is present. As usual the reverse is unmarked and the shank is missing, but the mold mark is clear. This is a solid example of the type with very few flaws.

    Description

General Service buttons of this type were typically used on infantry fatigue uniforms.  The ones used in the summer look like white pajamas.  They were in service from 1808 until 1830. It is a coat button, 19 mm in diameter. Pewter buttons, a combination of lead and tin, were easily cast due to the metal’s low melting point. They were also relatively cheap to produce. Another plus was that the finished buttons were bright silver in color and shiny like real silver. Pewter is a hard and strong alloy, but is does not fare well in the acid soils of the south. This example shows none of the “crumbling” edges typical of some dug pewter buttons. It is a water find. This example will make a nice addition to any collection.
