BRITISH CAPTURED GURKHA BROWN BESS BAYONET, SEPOY MUTINY, CALCUTTA, MARCH 29,1857
This very rare & fine quality Gurkha Brown Bess bayonet was captured by Lieutenant & Adjutant Henry Baugh when he served in the 34
th
Bengal Native Infantry Regiment during the Mangasl Pandey incident in Calcutta India on March 29, 1857 during the Sepoy Mutiny, Indian Rebellion of 1857.                                                                                                                                               It was surrendered to him when the regiment was disbanded on May 6, 1857 at Barrackpore after the regiment revolted against British rule.                                                                                                                                                                                               It is 18 1/8” long with a curved 12 1/4” x 2 1/16” blade & a 3 15/16” socket to fit the  3
rd
model Brown Bess musket                           It.is in very good + condition with light to light/medium pitting & has a nice aged patina.                                                                       There are very few artifacts from the Sepoy Mutiny & are never seen at militaria or antique shows!                                              This is NOT one of those junk Gerkha bayonets from an India arsenal that are being sold by a militaria artifacts company on the internet for an outrageous price!                                                                                                                                                            It comes with a certificate of authenticity & a family letter.                                                                                                                      See the captured Gerka knife captured at the same time as this bayonet listed separately.
