    : “
Antique early 19th Century leather wallet.  American; c1820s.  A great large hand sewn leather wallet with compartments.  Great provenance as this 200 year old wallet was originally owned by General William Crawford of Oakham, Massachusetts.  An older (c1950s) inscription in ink is penned inside the flap of the wallet and reads "
General William Crawford's Wallet, Oakham, Massachusetts.  Captain of Washington's Grenadiers in War of 1812, Graduated Dartmouth College 1807.  Born Rutland 1783 - died 1864
".  Further provenance is written in ink on an index card inserted in the wallet; the index card and writing appear to date from about the 1950s.  Index card reads "
Gen. William Crawford, Captain of Washington Grenadiers - War of 1812 - Brigadier General in Mass. Militia, Graduated from Dartmouth College in 1807
".  I do believe the information to be genuine and will guarantee the items authenticity for this was found in a box of items that belonged to descendants of Mr. Crawford and tha contained items from him and other family members.
In Good condition with moderate wear consistent with age as well as some partial tears to the stitching along some of its seams; outside leather strap has been torn off at some point in the past and is lacking; still very well preserved for being 200 years old!  No mold, smells or odors; leather is smooth and preserved as opposed to being dried and rubbing.
    My research shows that
William Crawford was Captain of The Washington Grenadiers in the War of 1812 and afterwards was promoted to Brigadier General in the Massachusetts Militia.  He represented Oakham in the Massachusetts Legislature, was State Senator, and, for many years, Chairman of the County Comissioners of Worcester County.  He served the town also as town cler, select,an, and member of the school committee, and was a teacher of great excellence in Oakham and neighboring towns.  He graduated from Dartmouth College in 1807.
    Measures 6 3/4" x 4" x 7/8" thick.

the grand kids have told me that they have no interest in any of the collections in the family’s traveling museum-- MOCAPA. A bit disappointing to hear but well understood in the 21st century. Plus, for me, collecting lacks the attraction that it had in years past as well as the steward collectors. Thanks, joe
