The following information has been kindly provided by one who is more knowledgeable that I regarding this epaulette:
"Here is some info about the epaulettes worn by US troops in the War of 1812.
The information is about the regular troops as State militias were all mixed up and wore what their individual state thought was best as uniforms ranged from smartly tailored to homespun and colors from grey, to green, brown etc.
Now the Marines, Engineers, Dragoon’s, Artillery, Light Artillery, and Medical wore epaulettes of gold while the Infantry wore epaulettes of silver.
1st, 2nd, 3rd, and ensigns in the Army wore a single epaulette on the left shoulder, Captains a single epaulette on the right shoulder, Field officers two epaulettes, and General Officers two epaulettes with either one or two stars as Major General was our top rank at this time."
