*** "Solid" The Real Deal ***
French AN XI Very Rare PRADIER Versailles V.1837
The "V" stands for Versailles. It is a scarce sword in any event. The poinçons indicate that Thiebaut was the maker of this one.
There is much more stamped on the ricasso which I am not able to read...
    Versailles
is stamped to the side of the guard being the factory where this sword was made from 1808 to 1837 at the boarders of France and Germany.
This sword may look like all of the Briquet, but is much more heavier and robust in size. This sword was meant for battle for its size and weight.
Please do not confuse this sword with the smaller sized Briquet same style smaller lighter sword.
This is an authentic 1837 (so stamped) sword made by a French manufacturer
    1808 -1837
. During the Napoleonic Wars it was decided that the massive French army would no longer be equipped with a variety of weapons from earlier periods. The so called Briquet was designed for the infantry to carry as a close in-fighting weapon. They had their muskets for organized volleys, the muskets had viciously long bayonets for dispelling a charge in ranks, but if the ranks broke, this short heavy sword was to be used for the close quarter melee that might follow. The infantry men in general were not highly trained in the use of the sword so this weapon is designed with hacking, hewing and clubing in mind - ergo the heavy construction and mighty solid brass hilt. Still, the brass hilt gives the necessary balance for the thick blade which tapers its full length.
    - The sword is very solid nice throughout including its original scabbard.
