Description
French Light Cavalry Officer Saber Sword BLADE French Revolutionary through the beginning of the 1st
First Empire Period (Blade Only)
This is a classic shape and form French officer or sous-officier blade for light cavalry from the early Napoleonic period and likely dates from the French Revolutionary period through the beginning of Napoleon's Consulat about 1793-1800. The undecorated blade is a smaller and lighter version of those carried by the enlisted troopers. I have seen many examples over the years and this blade is virtually identical to a blade on a light cavalry (HUSSARD or CHASSEUR A CHEVAL) sabre that I had a few years ago. At that time I placed this blade next to the one on the complete sword and the last two images from my photo files are provided here so you can see the type sword this would have been on. The complete sword of course is NOT included in this auction -- just the sword blade. This is a wonderful study piece for a collection of Napoleonic or swords in general as it affords the chance to see what a blade detached from its hilt is like. It was also be a possibility for restoring a sword. The tang has several interesting marks both stamps and finishing marks.
BLADE
Curved undecorated approximately 32 & ½ ” blade with a wide central fuller which ends inches approximately 5 ” from the point. The tang is complete and approximately 5 & 1/2 " long. At the ricasso it is approximately 1 & 1/4 inch wide. The blade has some surface staining and some light surface nicks. The tip area is slightly bent and blunted as often seen on unrestored period blades. It is the type of blade that would be used in the field on campaign.
Overall this blade including the tang is just under approximately 38 inches in length.
