    Description

Original Dutch 1794-1799 Portrait Etching of French Revolutionary Napoleonic General PICHEGRU
    DE GENERAAL PICHEGRU.
    In excellent
condition this finely executed UNFRAMED etching is on heavy period watermarked paper measuring about 9 inches high by 5 inches wide. The site etching is about 5 & 5/8 high inches by 3 & 3/8 inches wide. The famous French Revolutionary general’s portrait is artistically depicted in a frame which is on a wall above a pedestal that has his name chiseled in Dutch. The initials A. S. of the painter as well as name of printer Reinier Vinkeles (1741-1816) of Amsterdam appear at the bottom. There is a small fold line near the bottom of the paper and not on the etching itself. The etching was done during the period 1794-1799. There is a similar example in the Rijksmuseum. The reverse has a collection inventory number penciled at the bottom right and there are some small white paper strips on the rear probably used in mounting the art at one time.
    General Jean-Charles PICHEGRU (1761-1804)
In his early service he fought in the American Revolution. A leading general during the French Revolutionary Wars his army overran the areas of Belgium and the Netherlands before campaigning on the Rhine. He later changed allegiance to the Royalist cause and was captured in 1804 after an unsuccessful plot to assassinate Napoleon.
