Description

French sword / saber model 1816 with scales, foot artillery
It is a model 1816 foot artillery sword.
With a design very inspired by the gladius of the Roman legionary, it is a rather heavy weapon for its (small) size.
It is of total uselessness in combat, its only function being decorative or prestige.
The sword 1816 will be simplified to replace the An XI lighter of the infantry in the form of the Saber de Troupe à Pied Mle 1831
Handle and guard in cast brass with scale decoration, the guard carrying two rolls.
The handle is crossed by tang, riveted at the top.
Three iron pins ensure the assembly of the handle on the tang.
Originally, the handle had two Fleurs de Lys on either side of the pommel.
We were then in the midst of the Restoration, and the new regime wanted to erase the Revolution-Directory-Empire period.
The problem is that a second revolution, in 1830, brought a new king.
Louis-Philippe did not want the Fleur de Lys.
The pommels of the 1816 swords were filed to remove the cursed flower, while the new fabrications received a rooster instead.
No luck !
in 1848, a new revolution!
The Second Republic immediately made a "clean sweep" of the past and files the roosters.
The result: a bare pommel.
By the way, if you are lucky enough to come across an 1816 with Fleur de Lys and (also) to be able to buy it ... do it!
