    This very nice and impressively large French Naval Boarding Axe with four-sided spike is one of the many variations used during the French Napoleonic Second Empire Era mid 19th Century. It wears a hefty Axe Head with four sided spike that measures 12 11/16 inches across with a cutting edge of 7 9/16 inches. The Axe Head has developed a beautiful, rich aged patina and remains very securely in place. The Spike has a chip at its extreme tip on one side which could be remedied in the right hands. The large wooden shaft has survived in very healthy condition, still wearing most of its original black paint finish and is fitted with a brass pommel and brass butt cap. Overall the Axe measures 30 7/8 inches in length and weighs just shy of 6 pounds!
