MEXICAN CANNON GRAPE SHOT BALL FIRED AT THE ALAMO,1836,MENGER HOTEL COLLECTIONThis large unfired Mexican cannon grape shot ball was one of several that was found in the back yard of the Menger Hotel in San Antonio, Texas in 1859. I
t is 1 7/8” diameter
&
is in very good condition with light pitting & has a dark brown patina. NOTE - I use a generic picture as I have several & they all are in about the same condition. The one purchased may not be the one in the picture but will be in about the same condition.
There were several cannonballs, grape shot & canister balls that were on display in the Menger Hotel for several years & were part of a small private collection of Texas artifacts in San Antonio until they were bought by James Andrews.
He had an ancestor at The Alamo & bought as many Alamo artifacts that he could find.
He had them on display in the Brownsville, Texas United Confederate Veterans Museum from the late 1890’s until 1929 when the museum closed down.
He took the artifacts home with him when the museum closed down.
It comes with a certificate of authenticity & letter from his great grandson who inherited the museum’s collection.
There are very few artifacts from the Texas War for Independence of 1836 War & are very seldom seen at Militeria or antique shows!
