Description
DescriptionHere is a nice 18th century naval midshipman's wooden pressgang tool in good original condition. The solid hardwood surface has a nice patina with wear from age which can be seen in the photos. The solid head is connected to the handle by two leather straps which have been partially covered by a stitched material tube covering which can also be seen in the photos. On the end of the handle is the original leather wrist strap. Pressgang tools were used for keeping sailors in line and for pressgang recruitment work on land as well as being useful during a boarding attack and self defence on pay day at the docks. Originally from Leith docks, Edinburgh Scotland from a maritime naval collection. In total measuring 17 inches long and the solid shaped head measures 2 inches wide.
