    Description

Up for bids is this large antique original War of 1812 era powder horn.  The horn shows age and use with some great period scrimshaw work.  Images depicted are as follows: sun, star, moon, anchor, the name "MAMMOTH HORN", several ships, two of which appear engaged in battle, plus an elephant, a native, a lion, a man with a musket shooting  a bird, an eagle and a dog.  The horn is translucent enabling the user to see his powder level when held up to a light source. The horn has a history connecting it to the the U.S. privateer "Mammoth", which was a very successful raider in the War of 1812.  This is oral history, unproven but seems to be a logical conclusion.  It is neither signed nor dated.  This ship made several stops in the Portsmouth, NH region during the war.
