Description
Up for Consideration is a Scarce Late 18th Century American Engraved Brass Pipe Tomahawk with a Dovetailed Steel Cutting Edge
c.1780-1830
This late 18th to Early 19th century American made Eastern woodlands Pipe Tomahawk Trade Axe came out of a Museum Collection in Edinburgh, Scotland over 25 years ago.The Eastern Woodlands Pipe Tomahawk, also known as a trade Axe, is a fascinating artifact from the fur trade era. These tomahawks were highly valued by Indigenous tribes and European traders alike. They served a dual purpose: as a weapon and a ceremonial smoking pipe . The Tomahawk measures approximately 19.5 inches tall with a brass head measuring 7.85 inches long by 2.50 inch wide blade with a 1.0 inch Tobacco bowl with correct, neck, eye and bowl. The blade has a beautiful dovetail steel edge. The Tomahawk head came to us with no haft so we've added a beautifully hand crafted reproduction wood haft which can be smoked. (Note images)
These type of Trade Axes were made for Export to the Colonies and given to the British or French Troops to Trade with the Native American Tribes during Wartime. Most of these Trade pieces were very ornate and manufactured by companies such as Sheffield of England. This was defiantly made by a trained artisan who was probably a native to the States. The Traditional Punched Heart at the front of the Axe head was very typical of types of Trade Axes coming out of Europe at that time.
Condition is nice and Axe Head defiantly shows age ware, scratches, nicks and a dark untouched patina. Sadly as there are many reproductions of these types of Tomahawks and we are not experts in this particular area of collecting all we can say is that the Tomahawk head does appear to be authentic but please note all images provided on this listing to make your own opinion.
Other than the noted issues, this Pipe Tomahawk Axe has great character, fantastic patina throughout and would make a great addition to any Native American Tomahawk/Trade Axe collection and
had been on display in a Private Museum in Worcester, Massachusetts ever since.
A BEAUTIFUL PIECE!
