    Description

    Offered . .......
    a very rare
English Victorian solid sterling silver military officers pouchbelt sash decoration from the 13th Light Dragoons.
Very few of these survived.  This piece was a decoration on the pouchbelt or sash of a British military officer in the 13th Light Dragoons in the mid 1800's.  This Brigade was formed in 1715 by King George I, became the 13th Light Dragoons by the late 1700's.  It was combined with other Light Dragoons during the Crimean War and took part in the Charge of the Light Brigade.  It then became the 13th Hussars in 1861.
The 6-lobed piece is hallmarked for sterling silver, London 1849 with an

maker's piece was .  The arrows each bear the lion passant  the

maker's marks.  The shield shaped piece is hallmarked for Birmingham 1856 with a maker's mark that looks like
    J & C
.  The arrows fit perfectly into the sheathes on the shield. There are brass pins on the back of the shield holding the arrow sheathes onto the shield, and both badges have bolted on fittings with brass wire stretched between them. The two badges would have been sewn to the outer garment.
The 6-lobed badge is about 2 inches in diameter, and the shield is about 4 1/8 inches tall with the arrows in place (3 1/4 inches without the arrows) by 2 1/8 inches at the widest.  The arrows are 3 inches  long and the double rolo chain stretches about 14 1/2 inches between the two badges. End to end the piece is about 20 inches long. It weighs about 72.4 grams total.  The piece in excellent pre-owned condition with minor signs of wear, but no damage.
Pictures and descriptions of similar pieces can be found at MDL Historic Military Antiques, Uniformology and the National Army Museum, Chelsea, London websites. On the Britishcavalryregiments site, there is a very good photo of Lt Col Robert Baden Powell of the 13th Hussars wearing the decorated sash-the photo can be enlarged to see detail.
