The author, Antoine Henri De Jomini, was born in Switzerland in 1779. After a brief encounter with the Paris business world, he joined the French Army at the age of 17. His first historical work on the campaigns of Frederick the Great, brought him to the attention of Napoleon who immediately recognized Jomini's penetrating militaristic mind and promoted him to Colonel in December 1805. Jomini served as Chief of Staff to Marshal Ney and with Napoleon in Russia. In 1869, Jomini died. During his lifetime he produced more than 25 volumes of military history and theory and was considered one of the most greatest military thinkers of his time.
